THE OPPORTUNITY: Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists is a growing healthcare practice based in the greater New Haven community with a strong commitment to providing excellent care and customer service to our patients, athletes and employer clients. The LPN position provides direct support to the physician and/or mid-level provider and assists with all aspects of the physician’s practice. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, assisting the provider with all aspects of administrative and clinical duties to ensure good patient care and outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist provider in clinic to ensure that patients are best cared for
  • Prepare and organize and clean exam rooms each day
  • Room patients and start the notes in our EMR
  • Applying casts, removing wound dressings, sutures, and casts
  • Fitting patients with durable medical equipment and braces appropriately and completing billing paperwork accurately
  • Heavy phone contact – point person for clinical phone calls
  • Triage clinical phone calls
  • Pre-authorizing and calling in prescriptions and/or injectables for the physician
  • Ensuring tests results are received before surgery; are reviewed and distributed appropriately (i.e. provider, facility, etc.)
  • Following up on surgical patients to ensure necessary pre-op and testing appointments have been completed
  • Collect patient outcomes data for provider
  • Patient contact and liaison with outside agencies
  • Booking provider requests for tests and surgeries for patients and obtaining authorizations, recording information in proper location (Mainly handled by the secretary)
  • Contacting outside facilities and processing related paperwork such as other physician offices, hospitals, and surgical centers and providing them with the necessary information to schedule tests and surgeries
  • Contacting patients with pertinent information regarding their scheduled test or surgery and scheduling necessary follow up visits (Mainly handled by the secretary)
  • Accurately documenting necessary information in the computer system, such as pre-certification numbers, and chart for patients having tests and procedures
  • Preparing paperwork, x-rays, and other documents as needed for the physician to be available for him or her to take to surgery
  • Directing requests for worker compensation approval of tests and surgeries and other related information to the case manager
  • Scheduling post-op and first physical therapy appointment and informing patient
  • Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and compliance of all HIPAA regulations
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills
  • Must possess proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, surgeons, physician assistants and other senior clinical practitioners
  • Must have excellent time-management skills
  • Must have outstanding professional medical phone communication skills and can coordinate with outside facilities to obtain patient medical information, following HIPAA regulations
  • Ability to relay information in a positive manner and calm patients, presenting solutions for their problems

Education/Experience requirements

  • LPN licensure
  • High school Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • 3-5 years of experience as a License Practical Nurse is required
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in an orthopaedic practice preferred
