John S. Reach, Jr., M.Sc., M.D. is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Connecticut Orthopaedics. He is also the former Director of Yale Foot and Ankle Service and previous Chief of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Section. Dr. Reach is board-certified in Orthopaedic surgery and fellowship trained in advanced foot and ankle reconstruction. He has extensive experience in surgical management for the lower extremity.
Dr. Reach is one of the few surgeons certified in all available total ankle replacements. He is a pioneer in the use of advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound for soft-tissue and sports pathology. Dr. Reach has other interests in sports foot & ankle injuries, tendon/ligament repair, rheumatoid arthritis, lower extremity deformity correction and lengthening, multiplanar computer assisted external fixation, micro-neuro-vascular surgery, great toe arthritis (Cartiva) and deformity, arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive cartilage repair, computer navigation, Total Ankle Replacement, Total Ankle Revision and limb salvage.
Dr. Reach is an inventor and implant designer. He serves as a consultant for many orthopaedic, imaging, and insurance companies. He has testified to Congress on the importance of foot and ankle care. Dr. Reach has been issued a number of patents for his work on cartilage repair, musculoskeletal imaging and ligament/tendon enhancement. His current research is focused on minimally invasive treatments for patients with arthritis, athletic ankle injuries, out-patient ambulatory surgery, pain-less surgery, and focal cartilage defects for custom cartilage transplant repair.
Dr. Reach is recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in Orthopaedics. Dr. Reach currently performs the highest volume of total ankle replacement operations in Connecticut and the North East and has received awards for quality outcomes in these surgeries.
Despite his interest in advancing the science and practice of Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery, Dr. Reach’s guiding philosophy is that the needs of the patient come first.
