
David B. Cohen M.D. is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who is fellowship trained in
shoulder and knee surgery, arthroscopy, and the management of sports related injuries.Dr. Cohen is the team physician for Quinnipiac University and The New
Haven County Cutters professional baseball team. He has been the assistant team physician
for The Power, New Yorks womens professional soccer team and has been team
physician for multiple high school and college athletic teams. Having raced for the
Dartmouth college mens alpine ski team, Dr. Cohen also has extensive experience
managing ski-related injuries.
In 2004, The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
presented Dr. Cohen with the Excellence In Research Award for his research on the effects
of anti-inflammatory medications on rotator cuff tendon repair. The Society gives this
award for the best paper of the year in sports medicine.
He is an attending surgeon and clinical instructor at Yale-New Haven
Hospital and the Hospital of Saint Raphael.
Graduating cum laude from Dartmouth College, Dr. Cohen went on to the
Dartmouth-Brown Combined medical program where he graduated in the top ten percent of his
class. He completed his general surgery internship at the New York Hospital, and his
Orthopaedic surgery residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell
University Medical Center in New York. He then studied under the distinguished shoulder
surgeon Professor Christian Gerber in Zurich, Switzerland where he gained experience in
the management of complex shoulder problems as a traveling fellow.
Following his year as Chief Resident, he was selected for an
additional year of training in the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Reconstruction Fellowship
at the Hospital for Special Surgery under Russell Warren, M.D., Head Team Physician for
the New York Giants football team. During this fellowship, Dr. Cohen learned the most
advanced techniques in non-surgical and minimally invasive surgical management of knee and
shoulder disorders as well as sports-related injuries.
Dr. Cohens surgical interests include the all-arthroscopic
management of rotator-cuff disease, dislocations, and labral tears of the shoulder; total
shoulder replacement for arthritis; knee arthroscopy for meniscal tears, ligament
ruptures, instability, and cartilage injuries; total knee replacement for arthritis;
treatment of ligament and tendon disorders of the elbow and ankle. Whenever possible, Dr.
Cohen is a strong proponent of non-surgical management and rehabilitation of these
injuries.
Dr. Cohen is the author of multiple peer-reviewed research articles
and book chapters on knee and shoulder pathology. His research has examined healing after
rotator-cuff surgery, Anterior Cruciate Ligament graft orientation, knee osteochondral
allografts, and the outcomes of arthroscopic labral repair in the athletes shoulder.
He has presented his research at national and international meetings, been a member of the
faculty at professional education courses, and lectured extensively at Yale-New Haven
Hospital, The Hospital For Special Surgery, and Cornell University Medical Center. He is a
member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and American Orthopaedic Society
for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Cohen lives with his wife Allison, a pediatrician, and their
daughter Sydney. He loves to spend time with his family, ski, golf and sail.
